[Àױ׸®µå ÀüÁÖ»ìÀÌ] Superstitions

Today is Friday the 13th. Traditionally this is seen as a bad luck day, a day to beware of bad things happening to you. Thirteen is seen as a bad luck number because there were thirteen people at the last supper before Jesus was betrayed by one of his disciples attending that dinner and then he died on the cross on a Friday, making Friday bad luck too. So my students always laugh when we mention this, and some of them acquainted with it make jokes. When I was a kid I learned about Friday the 13th but I didn’t buy into it very much even though my classmates made a big deal of it. Some people are affected by triskaidekaphobia which is the scientific name for fear of the number 13. These people actually fear going out on that day for fear something will happen to them. Other people take greater care and so according to some studies, there are less accidents on Friday the 13th because people are more careful to avoid bad things.

I had no fear of the number 13. I thought it was silly to skip floor 13 in a building and go to 14 instead. You may call it floor 14 but it is still number 13. Same in Korea many people fear the number four because the Chinese character for death and 4 are the same and so the 4th floor is often named “F”. I usually tell people that I am not afraid of 13 because my sister’s birthday is June 13th, so the worst thing (my middle sister) is the worse bad luck that could happen to me so everything just makes my life better. Just trust me on the evil middle child theory.

I did try to avoid letting a black cat cross my path. That is another superstition from my youth. If a black cat (other colors are fine) walks across your intended route, you should change routes or you will get bad luck. Now I just think that when a cat or dog of any color runs in front of my car. I don’t want to kill them. Same as walking under a ladder is bad luck. I thought it was just foolish to walk under a ladder because usually painters are on them and they may drop paint on you accidently. That and you have to go out of your way to walk under them usually.

The only superstition I believed in was breaking a mirror gives you seven years bad luck. I was trying to show my anger when I was 8 years old so I took a page off of TV and books and slammed my door shut. The resulting crash ended up being the bathroom mirror hitting the floor. I cleaned it up and hung another mirror that was hanging in a closet by my father caught me and punished me. After that many bad things happened to me so I did believe I was surrounded by bad luck and wondered if it would ever end because it seemed to me that it lasted fourteen years.. I was but a child then and I no longer believe in luck. Either you are prepared for the future to make good use of things as they come to you or you are not ready and can’t take advantage of opportunities. Luck is what you make of life. So have a good Friday the 13th!
