Sometimes I write this column days before it is due but other weeks nothing happens to write about or I am just jammed for time so I end up writing this an hour before it due on Thursday at 4pm. I enjoy writing this column but sometimes nature and fate work against me. Take today, for instance. I am on vacation with nothing particular to do today except write this column. But Wednesday night my wifi went out and no matter what I did, I could not reconnect. It wanted a password and no matter how many I tried, I could not get the right one. It has been four years since it was set up and I never needed the password so...the password is lost. No connection. No emails, latest news, weather, Plants vs Zombies updates, no late night television hosts making me laugh. I felt like an arm was cut off. Okay, well I can have a friend arrange for the cable repair person to come. She called and they said to turn it off and on again to reset it. I was taught that trick two years ago and it had worked until Wednesday night. Okay, I can go to school or coffee shop and do it there if it isn't repaired before my deadline.
And so it happened. No one can come until Saturday 10:30 am. Okay, let's go out even though it is really cold. Hmm. No hot water so no shower. All right, I will sit far from other people so if I am odoriferous no one should notice. I head for the door. Now last night I couldn't get the door open because it had frozen shut. I put a space heater on the door at noon so a repairperson could get into the house. Now, the door was nice and warm but the problem is I live in a store. So the door is thick frosted glass and the bottom isn't a close fit with the floor so to prevent a draft I put small towels on the floor between the door and the wooden step. Well, my house is humid. I dry wet clothes indoors in this weather, I boiled some chicken breast for my dogs to heat up the house a little and I baked a chocolate cake to get rid of the chill in the air this morning. Although my birthday was almost a month ago, I never got around to having a birthday cake so I thought baking one today could kill two birds with one stone. It was a dark chocolate cake and the house felt warmer and smelled great. But the door was still not going to open. So I boiled some water and poured it on the towels, being careful not to touch the
glass. I learned the hard way as a child about hot water and cold glass. We had a beautiful and rare eight sided fish bowl. Mom asked me to wash it. I filled the sink with hot water, put it in and it cracked. I have never forgotten that lesson. Even though the door is tempered this is still the stupid kind of thing that happens to me. So I managed not to shatter the door with hot water and was free of the house. It was almost four. There is a little coffee shop, an independent one at the end of my block and it is the closest one. So it is just me and the owner. It is too cold to wander around outside. When I get home there will be two dogs hoping for a walk but sorry puppies, I don't want to walk in this weather. They have a backyard. So the column is finished and it is time to go home and frost that dark chocolate cake and drink some hot tea. Stay warm if you can!
