Last weekend was a very difficult one. On Friday morning I found my hot water pipes had frozen but my floor heater was fine. Now this puzzled me. Don’t they go through the same system? How can one freeze and not the other? I guessed that perhaps the pipes leaving the heater and going into the kitchen and bathroom froze. So I first put a space heater in there for a few hours but nothing happened, so I sat down with a hair dryer and heated every part of any pipe that wasn’t sufficiently covered with insulation. At the suggestion of Eunha’s brother, I left the water on for the hot water so I could hear it when it melted and started running. The cold water was running fine. So when I found it was on I expected the water would start being heated. Nope. I was told they were heated separately. I had to go out so I boiled a lot of water and showered by pouring lots of big plastic ladles of water over my head. It took a little time but I was clean and could go out.
Later that day the floor heat died. Now this could be fixable if I was going to be there for a while. I would have put the new space heater into the heater room and then waited and used the other space heaters to keep me, the dogs and the birds warm. But I was leaving for a few days and I could not postpone it. So I called poor Eunha and told her about my problem and she ended up being responsible for my heater and my house. I left Saturday at midnight. One of her brother fixes heaters but he lives far away. She had to come in between her classes and try to fix my heater, defrost my heater and get a professional in to fix it. She called all the ads in the yellow pages until she found one who could come to my house. Another brother helped by coming into my house and checking to make sure once it was fixed to make sure it does not freeze again. By the time I came home on Wednesday night, the house was comfortably warm and I had hot water when I sent to bed. She told me it cost 300,000 won and it was cheap compared to how much some people were charging to fix heaters. But when I woke up in the morning it was cold. I panicked, thinking I had done something wrong and it was broken again. So I called Eunha. She told me to turn the heater off and turn it on again. I did and then it worked again. I am lucky to have a friend like Eunha to help me like this, because the entire time I was on vacation she worked to make sure my pets and my things would be safe and I had a comfortable warm home to come back to. My friends are incredible.
