I recently saw a notice in one of my usual coffee shop haunts. It was about the government's law that coffee shops will be heavily fined if they allow customers to use disposable cups inside the coffee shop. They must only use reusable cups inside and plastic cups are for takeout only. One of the coffee shops at school is promoting the use of your own reusable cups. That is a good idea. Now if you buy the cups from the coffee shops they can be very expensive but Daiso and other places sell them much cheaper. The only thing is you have to remember to wash them. I have to be honest, I have more of those reusable tumblers than I care to admit. I need to remember to take them with me and I do have to match the lids to the bases first, however.

This law is probably about time. When my friend Sherry was visiting from Canada, we went out every day for coffee and were joined by other friends. After she left I put the cups together inside of each other and, well, I had almost a meter length in plastic cups to put into my recycling. That is not something I should be proud of; I am actually embarrassed but it is the truth. And straws. I consciously took the used straws out of cups and kept them in my car to reuse, and just refused them inside the coffee shops if I remembered before the barista stuck one in the cup. But I would need one if I took it into the car.

So my tumblers will work fine at most coffee shops except my favorite. I like Liter coffee. I always get the liter size. So I want to continue but that may require me putting it into two cups. I don't really want to carry a thermos with me either. I have been putting it into a larger metal bottle but I still have to get it from the shop in the big plastic glass. So I searched the internet. My two usual Korean sites found nothing. The usual stores in town, also failures. Even a Canadian site had nothing useful. I did, however, find a light thermos I could drink out of that was exactly a liter without being bulky or having a complicated or small lid from a Chinese site. I hope that it will work well like a mug for hot coffee. I still prefer a straw for cold drinks. So I looked and I found straws. I found metal straws of various colors, lengths and thicknesses. You can even buy a small carry case for them, so I did. I bought some straws for the car and a few for home and test to see how they work. They come with a small wire brush for cleaning the insides, not that I really expect to use them for anything besides water and coffee. But still nice to know I can scrub them clean.

I will have to wait for a month for them but I look forward to trying them and do my part to help the environment.
