[Àױ׸®µå ÀüÁÖ»ìÀÌ] Wanju English Camp

Jeonju University is playing host to the Wanju 2014 Triple Play English Camp. There are over 100 students ? middle school and elementary school, divided into 10 groups, each group with a native speaking English professor and a Korean university student assistant. They stay in the dormitory and eat in one of the cafeterias. In the mornings they have classes, in the afternoon they have intensive reading and then other activities. In the evenings they have activities and writing a journal.

We started last Sunday. We had the opening ceremonies in the morning. I was asked to introduce myself in a unique way. I went in a beautiful new dress with a volleyball. Someone asked me if I wanted to leave it in the office but I declined. When I was introduced I bounced my ball off my arms twice and then volleyed it higher into the air. My introduction was that I loved volleyball and my name and country. People were surprised by the use of my volleyball in an introduction so it was fun. After all the speeches, the parents left and the kids went to the dormitories. After lunch we met in the classrooms where we did icebreaker activities and decorated our classroom. I had the kids introduce themselves and then I made them get in a circle wearing their nametags. First I pretended to be a zombie and slowly walked toward a student. If they said another student’s name before I touched them, then I had to start walking toward that person. If I touched them before they said a name, then they became the zombie. If they said the zombie’s name, they became the zombie. It was a lot of fun and soon everyone knew everyone’s name and we played sudden death no nametag zombie tag. The kids loved it. Then we got huge pieces of paper and made pictures and hung them on the walls. I even made a poster representing me with a Scottie dog, a dragon, volleyball and books. I mean to add to it as the days pass.

On Monday they had to teach the teachers about Korea. Some classes chose brands, famous people and sport figures, fairy tales and I ended up with food. So we chose some food other than kimchi ? snack food, soups, desserts, main meals. Students drew posters and each one presented a recipe to the visiting teacher. We visited each room and had a quiz at the end of the day. I didn’t fare very well. The next day was hospital day. We learned a lot of medical terms and the difference between sick and hurt. I also taught some basic first aid, like the Heimlich maneuver, and applying direct pressure to cuts, removing bee stingers, general things like that they should know. Wednesday afternoon we went to the culinary arts building where a professor taught them about sandwiches and non alcoholic cocktails. Kids, always being hungry, loved it and I think there were no leftovers because they ate everything. Three of them shared drinks and sandwiches with me and they did a good job. Monday night I helped with the evening activity ? relay races, shoe hunt and a zombie game. The shoe hunt was everyone puts their shoes in a pile and then gets back into their groups, forming a line. The first person in each line runs to get their shoes, puts both on properly and runs back and touches the next person in line who then hunts for their shoes. The first group finished wins. The zombie game is like freeze tag with the undead. Five or 7 zombies start at the far end, everyone else is human. The leader says “Zombies take 5 steps”. Then “Humans 9 steps”. If the humans make it to the far wall, they live. The kids really liked this game. Five days down, 14 more to go. /ÀüÁÖ´ë ±³¼ö
