[Àױ׸®µå ÀüÁÖ»ìÀÌ] Local Charities

Every year the foreign community and our Korean friends participate in different charity work in Jeonju. We feel we are part of the community so many of us do things for disadvantaged local people. Two weeks ago there were performances of “Vagina Monologues the Remix” in Songcheondong. Seven talented actors took to the stage for two performances. Some of the scripts were the same as two years ago when I participated and there were new monologues and ones written by local people. Joni, the director, who is currently living in Kyoungju, came every weekend to prepare for the performances. Most of the money goes to the Jeonbuk Women’s Association United (JWAU) which provides shelters for battered and abused wives and children. The rest of it goes to an international fund to help. The performance I saw was good and the Korean subtitles were well timed. I went out for dinner with the cast afterward. The writer of one of the new pieces asked my opinion of it and I hope I gave him some useful feedback. I am always surprised when my opinion is sought after.

Another charity event was held downtown last Saturday. It was our annual murder mystery. Instead of buying a prepackaged murder mystery, some of our local writers created this one. It was about time travel and we were all people from different times trying to solve the murder. I was Scheherazade, the storyteller in 1001 Arabian Nights. Costumes are part of the game, so I wore white harem pants under a transparent purple skirt, a white shirt with metal decorations around the collar I got in Quatar and a head scarf with three metal decorations I got in Egypt. I also got the huge earring I wore from there. I even wore sandals. I was a queen, not a dancer so I wasn’t as sexy as I could have been. There were some great and very authentic costumes. The one who won best costume, again, came as a caveman wearing rugs for loincloths. He won with his superhero costume last year, too. He did a great job as a caveman, eating everything. I meet Rasputin, Socrates, J.F. Kennedy and Marilyn Monroe. It was a lot of fun and we had tasks to perform in three parts. Some I managed well, others not so well. At the end we had to submit our guess as to who the murderer is and I wrote down the correct name and scratched it out. Oh, well. But this money goes to Esther Park. She was born with imperforate anus which requires special and very expensive medication. She is an orphan who was living in an orphanage in Jeonju and last year was moved to a special care facility near Jeongup. We do several different fund raisers for her every year. One of the other is a marathon.

Terry Lyons has been holding a marathon walk along the Jeonju River and some people join him and others give him money. This year, because of an aggravated knee, he can only walk half a marathon. This year the walk is being held on May 24th. He welcomes anyone who wants to join him. He is also asking for donations for Esther and some other orphans he helps. So if you can, wire donations to Jeonbuk Bank account number 524 21 0630599. The account name is Terry Lyons Orphan Esther Park. For more information call 063-233-5622. Please help us support the Jeonju community.
